Democrats, the party of “unity,” decided to reject cooperating with Republicans to ram their relief package through Congress.
Instead of coming up with a bill that all could agree on, they are using reconciliation, so they only need a simple majority to get it passed.
But Republicans have been doing incredibly well at fighting them every step of the way. And now, it looks like Joe Manchin will defy the bill, citing the toxic $15/hour wage hike.
Democrats might have to drop that to get his vote. But if they do, they’ll lose outspoken leftists.
From Fox Business:
Democrats across the party’s ideological spectrum have mostly been unified on the need to pass to President Biden’s nearly $2 trillion coronavirus relief package, but progressives are threatening to withhold support if the measure doesn’t include a long-sought minimum wage increase…
“There’s a scenario, where if our party is voluntarily trying to strip this provision, where we take a stand against it,” Ocasio-Cortez told Politico.
Why It’s Important:
AOC, speaking for the far-left socialists of her party, said that if they drop the $15/hour wage hike, they’d oppose the bill.
Progressives have been fighting for a minimum wage hike for years. They argue those working at low-skill jobs should be paid a “living wage.”
Yet experts often explain that such a massive hike, nearly double the current national minimum wage, would put many out of work. A recent report revealed that over 1 million Americans will lose their jobs, if implemented.
That’s enough for Republicans to back down, as well as moderates like Manchin. But let it never be said that AOC doesn’t understand economics.
If there’s a radical, unsustainable, illogical progressive idea, the unseasoned Democrat is all for it.
Joe Biden recently admitted the wage hike has little chance of going through. Democrats put it in their plan anyway, casting the entire relief plan in doubt.
If AOC goes along and refuses to support the entire bill, she might be able to convince other progressives to turn on it as well.
But are there enough far-left Democrats in the House to kill this bill? If AOC does stage a revolt against the establishment, we’ll just how many socialists stand with her–and if they have enough clout to move the needle.
Chances are, however, AOC will back down and support this bill no matter what, since is mostly talk and little action.
- Republicans and some moderate Democrats oppose the COVID bill.
- Manchin will not vote on it over the $15/hour hike
- If that is removed, AOC and progressive may not support it themselves.
