During Joe Biden’s first weeks in office, he went on an executive order blitz that shattered American presidential records. Perhaps he wanted to prove that he’d be working hard from Day 1.
Of course, many of those edicts have since come under heavy fire, as Conservatives and Republicans pushed back against some of Biden’s more controversial policies.
And now, POTUS has set another record — and it’s one he might not be proud of.
When Biden was on the campaign trail, he took plenty of heat for “hiding.” Due to the ongoing pandemic, he was cautious and spent a lot of time removed from the public.
But now that he’s President and the pandemic appears to be trailing off (and vaccinations are rolling), the American people expect Biden to be more visible and accessible.
Except that hasn’t been the case.
As CNN’s Jake Tapper tweeted recently:
.@Kevinliptakcnn notes that an analysis of the past 100 years shows President Biden’s 15 most recent predecessors all held a formal solo press conference within 33 days of taking office. Biden has not and it’s day 42.
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) March 3, 2021
That’s 42 days in a row without holding a solo press conference: which breaks a 100-year-old record.
This prompts plenty of questions, especially from critics who claim the President continues to hide. These same critics have also raised concerns about Biden’s mental health in the past.
Democrats continue to dismiss such accusations, but the fact remains that Biden hasn’t spoken alone to U.S. citizens. And that’s definitely worth noting.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AR) quickly asked why Biden is still “hiding from the American people” on Twitter, and Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel added:
It’s been 42 days and Joe Biden still refuses to hold a press conference.
Why is he so afraid of answering questions?
— Ronna McDaniel (@GOPChairwoman) March 3, 2021
That does seem to be a valid concern, and one Republicans have seized upon this year.
The Biden administration’s apparent reluctance to tackle certain questions, as well as the President’s refusal to speak solo to the public, is a big issue.
However, the White House claims that Biden will soon step to the dais.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday that the President is scheduled to speak to White House press reporters, though she didn’t give an estimated date.
Biden has also received criticism for evidently dodging tougher questions, and there have been claims from journalists that the Biden admin won’t allow certain queries at press conferences.
This has led to more backlash, primarily because people cite Biden’s goal of having a “transparent administration.”
Well, it’s difficult to promote transparency with all these questions and concerns hovering around your presidency.
- Joe Biden has broken a record that stood for 100 years: he hasn’t held a solo press conference in 42 days.
- Republicans pounced on this news, and once again called out the President for hiding from the American public.
- The White House claims Biden is “scheduled” to independently address the press, but they didn’t say when.
