Joe Biden has officially chosen a running mate for his 2020 campaign, and he’s already talking about rules and laws he’d like to see enacted.
For example, the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee has been a staunch supporter of face masks for months. So maybe it’s no surprise he believes everyone should wear one.
But he took that idea a step further during a virtual pandemic briefing on Thursday.
That’s when Biden said he believes every American citizen should wear a mask outside “for at least the next three months”:
Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide.
Every single American should be wearing a mask when they are outside for the next three months at a minimum.
The former Vice President didn’t state an age range, so some assume he means everyone in the country, including children of all ages.
Biden then claimed such a policy would save 40,000 lives, and it’s “your responsibility as an American” to wear a mask in public.
But President Donald Trump doesn’t see Biden’s statements as accurate. In fact, Trump condemned the comments as simply a political tactic.
During a White House press briefing, the President said:
It’s a shameful situation for anybody to try and score political points while we’re working to save lives and defeat the pandemic.
He added that his administration has “urged Americans to wear masks when it’s appropriate.” And he believes Biden’s universal mask mandate would cause more harm than good.
The President says Biden and other Democrat leaders only want to “shut down our economy and close our schools and grind society to a halt.”
Trump has often railed against Democrats for wanting to enact universal laws, which he typically views as an overreach of government power.
By supporting a nationwide face mask order, Biden appears willing to give the federal government even more control over American citizens. And that viewpoint, whether it’s accurate or not, could play a role in November.
Trump added that Biden doesn’t understand how a mask rule would work:
Certain states that have fully reopened in recent months have experienced a surge of new coronavirus cases.
However, there are also states – and other countries – that have reported differing results.
But either way, Trump and his administration sees this as more of a political issue for Democrats.
- Joe Biden has called for a universal mask mandate in America, which would run for “at least three months.”
- President Trump criticized the statement, saying Biden is only trying to “score political points.”
- Trump further added that Biden doesn’t understand why the idea wouldn’t work, from a federal government perspective.
