Joe Biden has tried to be clear about his position concerning the pandemic and face masks. But in the eyes of many, that’s precisely what the former vice president has lacked: clarity.
The Democratic presidential nominee appears to flip-flop on his views concerning the possibility of a nationwide mask mandate. And he might’ve just done it again.
During a CNN town hall event on Thursday, Biden was pressed with various pandemic-related questions.
At one point, someone said the coronavirus messaging from the White House was “all over the place since February.” And what would Biden do to ensure the consistency of that message?
Biden’s reply might’ve surprised a few people, because he’s been on record in the past saying he supported a national mask mandate.
Via Fox News:
What presidents say matter. People listen. I will make it clear what is needed to be done.
I cannot mandate people wearing masks but we’ve just been told … we should expect another 215,000 dead by January.
Biden added that he’d tell “every governor in the country” to put mask mandates out. And if they don’t, he’d call the mayors in the towns and cities and demand they execute mandates.
It’s true that Biden has always said he’d press state governors to impose the mandates.
But he keeps going back and forth on the idea of a nationwide, federally implemented face mask rule.
For example, he spoke about his support of a countrywide mask mandate during an interview in June. And he again called for a national mask edict during a campaign event on August 13:
Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately and we will save lives.
But since he said that, many have wondered how he might enforce that law, and whether or not he has the power to do so.
Now, Biden says in fact, he “wouldn’t have the authority” to really enforce it, thereby potentially rendering the entire concept null and void.
All in all, clarity remains an issue on this topic. What Joe Biden wants, what he could legally do, whether or not he could enforce it; these are all lingering questions.
- Joe Biden appears to have flip-flopped yet again on the nationwide mask mandate idea.
- He has voiced his support for it in the past. But now he’s saying he probably “wouldn’t have the authority” to enforce it.
- Biden’s lack of consistency on this issue might continue to haunt him in November.
