We’ve heard all about Democrats’ attempts to kill the filibuster.
This one rule prevents Senate Democrats from railroading their agenda through.
Without 60 votes, a bill will never see the light of day. It gives the minority party (in this case Republicans), the power to influence legislation.
So, you can imagine how hard Democrats want to kill this rule. Republicans and a few moderate Democrats have protected the filibuster.
And now, an unlikely figure is upholding this long-standing rule.
From Fox News:
President Biden shot down calls to abolish the filibuster to clear the way for passage of the sweeping Democrat-backed elections overhaul, arguing that any effort to end use of the tactic despite a GOP outcry would jeopardize his entire legislative agenda.
“There’s no reason to protect it, other than you’re going to throw the entire Congress into chaos and nothing will get done,” he said. “Nothing at all will get done. There’s a lot at stake. The most important one is the right to vote, that’s the single most important one.”
Okay, this is a little odd.
As usual, we can’t be sure what Biden is saying. Because, not that long ago, he suggested he was open to ending the filibuster.
After all, his radical spending bills won’t get passed, unless the filibuster is gone.
But during last night’s CNN town hall, Biden seemed to be saying ending the filibuster would plunge Congress into “chaos.”
Of course, he phrased it in a way where he can’t be sure what he actually wants.
We do agree with him, though. If the filibuster was killed off, nothing would get done in Congress. Why?
Because Republicans, outraged that Democrats would pull such a stunt, would find other ways to stall congressional business.
Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham both warned what would happen. Republicans would bring Congress to a standstill, depriving Democrats of a quorum.
Without a quorum, they wouldn’t even be able to open a session. This is exactly what Texas Democrats are doing right now, by fleeing the state.
If Senate Democrats were so stupid as to eliminate the filibuster, Republicans would simply not show up. That would stall Congress for good.
Even Joe Biden knows this—and is throwing water on the idea of ending the filibuster.
The filibuster ensures both parties work together to pass legislation. Honestly, there needs to be something like that in the House as well, but there isn’t.
Do you think President Biden is one of our worst communicators?
- Joe Biden lets slip that the filibuster is needed in the Senate.
- He claimed during a town hall that if it is removed, Congress would be in chaos.
- The Democrat suggested nothing would get done if the filibuster was killed.
