As 2023 closed and the new year began, Congress left behind one last gift under the tree… for a largely disliked federal agency.
For years, the FBI has been angling for tax dollars to build a new headquarters. Some congressmen have pushed for the building to be moved out of D.C.
Congress just approved $300 million for the agency’s new base—in the not-so-far-away state of Maryland. This is not where some Republicans wanted it built. And now, Trump is calling out this plan, with a big reminder.
From The Post Millennial:
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “The FBI Headquarters should not be moved to a faraway location, but should stay right where it is, in a new and spectacular building, in the best location in our now crime-ridden and filthy dirty, graffiti-scarred, Capital.”“They should be involved in bringing back D.C., not running away from it, especially the violent crime,” He continued.
Not only did Trump not approve of plans to move the FBI to Maryland, but he called for the agency to stay in Washington, D.C. The former president said that the “crime-ridden” city needed the FBI to help clean it up.
It is no secret that the nation’s Capital is notorious for crime and poverty. Most lawmakers live far outside D.C. borders. And it seems that little is done by the federal government to address the problem.
It’s unclear how the FBI could play a role in improving D.C., as Trump suggests. The local city is responsible for the well-being of its community. And the FBI is responsible for crimes that break federal law nationwide.
However, Donald Trump went on to promise to restore D.C. as the nation’s “crown jewel” should he return to office. He went on to demand Congress not move the FBI, saying the agency should “make where they are now the safest place on earth.”
Trump’s sentiment will probably be echoed by many Americans. The FBI is the nation’s highest law enforcement agency. It receives tremendous federal funding to uphold the law. Why shouldn’t the city its main headquarters reside in not be safe and secure?
Yet in recent years, the FBI has been outed as a politically biased agency that uses its vast resources to protect Democrats’ interests. Many have lost faith in the FBI, over how it appeared to persecute Trump and other Republicans.
Key Takeaways:
- Congress approved $300 million for the FBI to build a new headquarters in Maryland.
- Trump condemned the decision, calling for the FBI to stay in Washington, D.C.
- The former president claimed the FBI should play a role in ending the crime epidemic within the nation’s Capital.
