Congress continues to debate another relief bill. They plan on sending more checks to American citizens.
But there has been plenty of criticism, especially since the previous package denied nearly 26 million Americans because of odd loopholes.
The latest bill, however, appears to be addressing that problem:
The HEALS Act attempts to rectify a frequent criticism of the first $2.2 trillion relief package. Under the CARES Act, Americans only received an extra $500 for their dependents if they were under the age of 17 — excluding, among others, millions of college students and disabled dependents…
But the latest proposal modified the stimulus checks so that families with dependents over the age of 17 will be able to receive the extra $500.
Why It’s Important:
According to reports, 26 million Americans did not receive support in the previous emergency package.
Americans with kids only got an extra $500 if their dependents were under the age of 17.
It seems the bill did not give out money to older dependent, even if they were being supported by family.
That meant families taking care of college students or disabled older children did not receive money.
This new bill will address nearly 26 million households, resulting in more support for these people.
There have been much discussion and criticism surrounding the government’s response to the pandemic.
The federal government has already spent trillions to address the fallout from states’ lockdown mandates.
Nearly 55 million Americans were put out of work.
But much of the relief funds went to large corporations or people who fraudulently squandered it.
Many were outraged to see how easily went to those who didn’t need it, while others got nothing.
Other fiscal hawks are against payments entirely, urging the country to reopen so Americans can go back to work.
- Congress is preparing another round of stimulus checks.
- The new bill will provide additional funding for families with dependents over 17.
- Critics of the bills pointed to problems in previous funding, where some Americans got nothing.
